Gaula water level report 7th of May 2009.

The river has been very high over the past week, at its highest it was flowing at around 800 m3/s. After this it was still very high for a few days, fluctuating between 500 to 700 m3/s, No salmon can negotiate the Gaulfossen at water levels like that.
During this week the river dropped slowly but steadily, and is today down to 200 m3/s, if it only sinks a little bit more now many salmon will swim up the Gaulfossen and continue their journey up the Gaula valley. The weather today is very bad indeed; it is cold and raining a lot. The weather was much better in the morning, but the spring feeling did not exactly increase during the day.

The water colour in the lower parts of the river looks very good, the colour is what it should be during a spring flood at this water level, so it does not look bad in terms of the mud slide at Lundamo. According to fishermen fishing the lower parts of the river, this was also better last year.

Today I went all the way up to the Frøseth Pool to take pictures, I did not see any salmon today either, but I am confident that the first salmon are in place in the currents of the Gaula. It will be very exciting to keep an eye on the next week, if the river drops to 180 m3/s a lot of salmon will swim through the Gaulfossen and up the river. If this happens, the fishing above Gaulfossen will begin earlier than usual, and this is why it will be extra exciting to keep an eye on the week coming up.

Tomorrow I will be going to Reading in England to take part in the Sportfish fly fishing fair, where I will be demonstrating fly casting with shooting heads. So it is a lot to look forward to for me, even before the start of the season.

The next report will be posted in a week!
