Gaula water level report 30th of April 2009.

Today I had my afternoon coffee at the Gaulfossen, the weather is fantastic in Trøndelag these days. It was just great to sit by the river and just enjoy life. Tomorrow I am off to Scotland, I will be a part of the fair arranged by the magazine “Trout & Salmon” in Kelso by the River Tweed. I will hold some seminars on fly casting there, and I very much look forward to it. It is great to be able to go to the place where fly fishing for salmon begun many years ago, I have seen pictures and read books of the Scottish salmon fishing since I was a young boy. That is why it is a great experience for me to be able to go there and demonstrate my casting techniques. This is what is on my mind this afternoon by the Gaulfossen, man do I look forward to both the trip to Scotland and of course t6he start of the salmon season back home in exactly 1 month.

The spring flood.
Over the past 4 days the river level has gone up and down a bit, but it has not been below 200 m3/s as measured at the Gaulfossen, thus no salmon has been able to negotiate it this week. Today is a very warm April day in the middle of Norway, so the river will surely increase a lot during the evening and night.

I just spoke to a friend from Røros, and he told me that it’s almost like summer in terms of the weather at Røros today. He also told me that there is a lot of snow around the most relevant areas for the Gaula water levels, i.e. Ålen and towards Tydal, plus the Singsås/Forelhogna area. All the small rivers are flooded at the moment. There were some ice fishermen in action at Røros yesterday, but the ice on the lakes is starting to melt at the edges, so it will melt very quickly over the next few days. The river increased to over 400 m3/s this afternoon but it will not stop there, which means that the spring flood is definitively here.

I did not see any salmon today either, but that is not unexpected given the water level.
Next report will be ready Thursday next week.
