Gaula water level report 29th of May 2009.

The water level of the Gaula was very stable in the first period after the last report, it varied between 180-320 m3/s up until Wednesday this week. For most of the time, the river was probably too high for the salmon to negotiate the Gaulfossen, but it was below 200 m3/s three or four times, and the temperature was measured to 7-8°C at Gaulfossen, so there is actually a possibility that a few salmon could pass through and swim upriver. On Wednesday this week the river increased from 310 m3/s to 630 m3/s in a few hours, this was due to a heavy rainfall in the mountains. This river is just incredible, as only 2 days later it is down to 280 m3/s again.

I have received many positive reports this week, salmon have been observed several places along the Gaula, also at Støren – more specifically at the glide of the Frøseth Pool, and also at the Moe Beat they have seen several salmon. Otherwise I have heard that several salmon have been seen below the Gaulfossen.

So far before the start of the season I can summarise by stating that the salmon have had several opportunities to negotiate the Gaulfossen this spring, it almost never happens that the salmon does not have any opportunities during the period April 25 to June 1 to pass the Gaulfossen, this has only been the case once during the past 10-12 years.
But the river has been flowing very steadily around 300 m3/s, it also did this as the Heggen (a local flower) bloomed early this week, this is a sign of the river not becoming any higher in terms of snow melting (spring flood), and at 300 m3/s a lot of snow has disappeared at this time.

From the Orkla there are reports of many salmon passing the counting station at the Bjørseth Dam, actually as many as more than 500 salmon have already passed as of early this week. This is quite an impressive number this early in the spring. The Orkla water temperature is measured at as much as 10°C; this indicates good conditions for opening fishing!

The weather in the Trondheim region today is calm but cool, so the Gaula will drop quite a bit throughout the day, but warm weather is forecasted for the weekend, so the river will still stay pretty stable for another few days ahead, unless we get more rain.

Then all that remains is to wish all salmon fishermen and women all the best for the 2009 fishing season, I very much look forward to get started with the fishing myself, so the mood is most definitively high. I urge all salmon fishers to adhere to the rules we have for this river in terms of day- and season quotas, plus disinfection of equipment. Set yourself a goal of releasing a salmon this season, it is a fantastic feeling to feel the salmon regaining its strength, and as it swims away you have no doubts that it will survive, this is a great experience. Just to be clear; I still take a few salmon home as well, I am not a pure C&R fisherman, but I have no problems with regulating this so that I stay within the 10 salmon a season quota – it is our responsibility to think of the future fishermen and women and salmon population!

Due to busy days before the start of the season I have not had the time to take pictures of the river for this report, apologies for this.

Jan Erik.
