Gaula water level report 27th of May 2010.

10 days have passed since I wrote the last report, and much has happened in terms of weather since then. The river was big from the 16th of May – it yo-yoed a bit in the following few days, but at all times it was too high for the salmon to negotiate Gaulfossen. However, in the last period the river has kept on dropping due to a cold front in this part of the country, the river has slowly but steadily dropped and is today down to 170m3/s as measured in Gaulfossen. This means that the salmon now can get up through the Gaulfossen, given that the water temperature is sufficient. I do not know the water temperature as of today, but personally I believe that many salmon are now negotiating the Gaulfoss valley to continue their journey further upriver towards their spawning grounds.

This is quite the perfect development both for those fishing below and for those fishing above the Gaulfossen, there will already be a few salmon above the Gaulfossen (see previous report). In addition the forecast is for some rain over the next few days so that the river will probably rise somewhat, and this means great conditions for the opening. This is simply going to be really exciting.

I drove up the Gaula valley today, the sun was shining and most places had become green and beautiful. The whole valley almost smelled of salmon fishing. I made a stop at Nils Joar Lien and had a few cups of coffee at his kitchen table, he could report that everything was ready for welcoming the fishermen, the first ones are arriving already this Saturday. I too will commence my fishing this season at Nedre Løberg, I expect a few people but that does not matter much – it is just nice to take it easy, enjoy life along the river and perhaps witness some salmon fights. Perhaps I will be among the lucky ones who get to experience the summer dream that is the strong runs of a big, silvery June salmon.

You can read about this in my fishing diary, it is already officially opened for the season, I will post reports from my own fishing trips as often as I can throughout the season, and I will also tell you about the development of the fishing and the river conditions as the summer gets on its way.
