Gaula water level report – 26th of April 2009.

I did my first trip up the Gaula valley today to get some pictures for the first water level report of the year. It was great to feel that good feeling re-emerge as I walked down to the river, it is almost unbelievable to think that a new season is fast approaching, man do I look forward to it! I could see many fishermen along the river and at the camp sites, this is also a great sign of spring.

Winter 2009.
This winter has really been of the good kind; with snow in early December, and since then it has been a constant snow cover in the Mid-Norway region. Not once has the snow melted away due to mild weather.
We also had some cold days before the snow came, and that means a lot for how fast the snow melt will occur. There has been a lot of snow throughout the Gaula valley, and reports tell of lots of snow in the Røros area this winter, but already during Easter the snow melt began, and the snow went rotten. The ice cover on the river also opened up around the same time, I was told about this just after Easter, when the ice disappeared in the Haltdalen area. The river Gaula was frozen almost throughout the whole winter, on a big part of the river as well. As I write this, all the snow has melted all the way up to Støren, but when you get further up the valley there is still snow.

Spring 2009.
The arrival of spring seems to be pretty normal, the river got quite a bit higher, up to 350 m3/s around Easter. Then we had some colder days with low night temperatures, thus the river dropped again and settled at around 70-80 m3/s. In the period between the 15th of April and until today the river has slowly risen, and has a peak today at around 270 m3/s due to great weather during the weekend, with temperatures around 15-20°C. The river looks great now, nice colour and water level.

Gaulfossen.
Any salmon entering the river last week would have easily negotiated the Gaulfossen this week. It was not until this weekend that the river got bigger than the level for when salmon are no longer able to negotiate the waterfall.
There are a few salmon entering the river from the sea these days, and they will not be able to negotiate the Gaulfossen at the current water level. However, if the river drops somewhat, they will swim right through. It will be very exciting to monitor this over the next few days. The next water level report will be ready next Thursday, it will be very exciting to summarise the development of the spring flood up until then. I will need more information in order to predict anything about the fishing upstream of Gaulfossen.
I did not see any salmon today, but I am confident that the first silvery large Gaula salmon have already returned home!

Stay tuned, this will be exciting!

Regards,
Jan Erik.
