Gaula water level report of 25 May.

Now there are not many days left until the season starts. I have met many salmon fishermen in May on the courses and demos, and I can tell you that the mood is good among the fishermen at this time.

I have not been in the river to take pictures for this report either, but as I've written previously there is no need to see the river to get the information you need longer.
Just visit their websites for NVE Gaulfossen and click into the plot for the last 14 days. There you can see the change in water level throughout the day.

The last time I wrote was on 13 May. Therefore it was very interesting to study the development of the water stands the changes to the present day. From 13 May until 18 May the river was well above the water level needed for the salmon to get over the waterfall. It was 515 cubic meters at its highest on 13 May. But throughout the day on 18 May the river dropped down to approx. 180 cubic meters. It was not much less this period, and then went over the salmon probably not due to cold water. On 20 May was again up in the 240 cubic meters, but then fell down to 140 cubic meters during this weekend. There are many who have contacted me regarding these days to ask if the salmon then sped up and went on up past the waterfall. This is obviously very difficult to know as the temperature is still low. (5 degrees Celsius on Monday, 23 May). I doubt that it went up. I also talked to some experienced fishermen on the Gaula Nature Center, they were also really in doubt.

This means that there was still time 4 -7. May which was the best compared to the salmon could go up the waterfall. I do not think these observations are promising in relation to the fishing should get started as early as possible above Gaulfossen after 1 June. Fortunately, one does not know all the salmon do. It could be that some individuals took up the falls on the weekend when the water level was at 140 cubic meters, but personally, I really doubt it.

At the moment the water level is approx. 200 cubic meters, the weather in Central Norway is gray and cold as it may be that the river drops below 180 cubic meters back towards the start of the salmon season. It will be exciting to watch until 1 June if this happens. The temperature of the water will probably not rise as much anyway because of the weather.

Stay tuned, the final report comes 1st June.

Jan Erik.
