Gaula water level report 21st of May 2009.

This week it has generally been good weather in Trøndelag, we got warmer temperatures as early as May 15, and throughout the weekend of 17th of May it was nice and warm. It was very exciting to keep an eye on this, as I assumed that the river would rise and become high. But it never really got higher than 300 m3/s, which indicates that the snow is running out. However, maybe the temperatures are not as high in Ålen/Tydalen/Singsås, the most important areas where the Gaula receive water from.
In this last period the river was as low as 180-190 m3/s, so it has gone up and down a bit over the past week. But no salmon would negotiate the Gaulfossen today; the river is too high now. I believe that the salmon had ample opportunities to negotiate the Gaulfossen several times between the 9th and the 15th of May. Reports tell of few salmon in the tagging nets at Agdenes, but they also said that the weather was of a type that would mean that the salmon could very well have passed outside the net. All in all spring is right on track, the Gaula valley is so green and beautiful that a few big Highlander tubes will be tied tonight due to a bad case of “the salmon shivers”.

Next report will be out on May 29.
