Gaula water level report 17th of May 2010.

The spring flood arrived late this year, due to a long-lasting late winter in the Trøndelag area. We only had a few days of nice weather during Easter, after this it has been cold and nasty up until the weekend of May 17th.

We have rarely had such a horrible spring as we’ve had this spring, I have held many courses and demonstrations during April and May, and during these evenings it has been really cold. This peaked during a demo in Sunndalsøra on May 3rd, when it snowed heavier than I have seen throughout the rest of the winter. A friend of mine went ice fishing at Røros last weekend, he could report on great skiing conditions and the ice was still thick, not much melting happening there yet. And this is why the Gaula has been low this whole time with the exception of one day at the end of April, when it was flowing at around 300m3/s as measured at Gaulfossen.

The salmon starts arriving around the end of April, then the first large salmon are heading up through the river valley, and at this time the river was so low that it was no problems for the salmon to negotiate Gaulfassen. I also know of a 13 kilo salmon caught at the mouth of the Gaula, a sea trout fisherman caught this fish right after Easter. The salmon arriving from the ocean now have been able to pass the Gaulfossen this whole time, with the exceptions of a couple of days. This means that from April 25th, when the first fresh fish are arriving, and up until May 15th it has been a breeze for the salmon to get through Gaulfossen. On May 16th the Gaula flowed at almost 800m3/s as measured at Gaulfossen, but the river is already dropping. Still, the salmon cannot negotiate Gaulfossen right now. As we know, somewhat depending on water temperature, the salmon cannot get through at water levels around and exceeding 180m3/s. The river has averaged at around 80-100m3/s for a period of around 3 weeks, i.e. from April 25th – which bodes well for the salmon fishers above Gaulfossen. Many salmon will most definitively have passed through Gaulfossen by now. However, when the river rose as much in such a short time due to 2 days of nice weather in Trøndelag it will become more difficult for the salmon which have already passed through, they will run quite a bit slower now than what would be the case during the water levels we had just before the weekend. Salmon will be caught in several places from the pools above the Gaulfossen as early as the first week of the season, as long as the river is fishable. I think it was great that the flood came just now, there is not as much snow in the river sources this year when compared to last year. This does not help a lot when the snow started melting as late as now, so it will be very exciting to watch the weather during the last part of May.

A new report will be posted later in May.
