Gaula water level report 14th of May 2009.

I was told of exciting news while I was in England; the Gaula had been almost been down to 150 m3/s on Friday.
Since my last report the river has dropped considerably, and it did so pretty quickly too. From the weekend (May 9) and until now the river has been flowing at around 170-210 m3/s, which means thatn the salmon most likely managed to negotiate the Gaulfossen early in this period, and this is good news for the fishermen fishing above the Gaulfossen. This is very important for the whole river, as it will not be a 100% fishing pressure below the waterfall. I will start a salmon fishing course at Rogstadmoen as early as 1st of June, so this is good news for the participants of this course. But in terms of the amount of salmon above the Gaulfossen we will have to wait until later towards the end of the month before we can make considerations, as the salmon run from the sea will just increase throughout May and June. And if the river is high in this period, there will be a few days of delays.

I had my afternoon coffee by the Gaulfossen this evening, but we did not see any salmon today. However, I have been told by other fishermen that salmon have been observed in the Gaulfossen pool. So things do look very good for an early and good fishing start, but as usual the Gaula may surprise us all. And that is of course part of the excitement.
