Mosand - Støren.

Mosand Støren, the land owner is Elin Kvam Lien. The family has offered salmon fishing for several generations and there are many stories of big salmon, and some smaller ones, being landed here. The business model in terms of the fishing has changed several times, and currently the beat is leased out via a long-term contract to YIT AS, who utilises the beat for various internal company arrangements. YIT wishes to offer available days/weeks to whoever would want to try this fantastic river.

If you want to have access to ”your own beat” this is the place for you.

The beat is available for individual fishermen for one or several days, or on a weekly basis for up to 8 fishermen. The day licenses are regulated in order to avoid waiting, maximum 8 licenses at any one time. With regards to weekly licenses it is possible to be more or less than 6 fishermen, if you are a group of fishermen, whereas the price is based on 6 fishermen.

Accommodation is also available. The cabins are located at the top of the beat. Two sleeping cabins with a total of 8 beds, there is a bathroom with a shower in one of the cabins. In the main cabin there is a kitchen and a bedroom, it is possible to connect to the Internet, and there is a smaller building with a toilet and a shed with firewood for camp fires. There is a fridge, freezer and equipment for a total of 8 people in the main cabin. There is also a “fisherman’s shelter” located at the lower parts of the beat. Everything is located so close to the river that you can both see and hear the salmon jumping.

The deep part of the river is located at ”our side” of the river at pretty much throughout the whole upper part of the beat, so there has been built a river bank reinforcement throughout a big part of the beat. The river is calmer in the lower part of the beat before it finishes at the beginning of a set of small rapids. The last part of the beat is very much suited to fly fishing, especially for those that only use overhead casts. He whole beat is great for those using all types of fly casting and also for people using lures or worms.

The river is constantly changing, throughout the past few year various floods have created small changes without this impacting the beat in any negative way. Especially over the past 3-4 years the lower parts of the beat has been experiencing the biggest changes. As there is no river bank reinforcement in the lower parts of the beat, flooding has created a smaller branch of the river. During the first years it was only when the water was high (exceeding 200 m3/s in the Gaulfossen) that there would be any water in this branch. The branch has been getting deeper lately, and this year, in 2009, it was difficult to wade across this branch unless the water level is less than 65 m3/s in Gaulfossen. This has meant that in large periods the beat size has been reduced from 800 metres to 650 metres. As of the 2010 season a bridge will be put out across this branch so that it is possible to fish the lower parts when the water level is above 65m3/s.

Ideal water levels for this beat is between 40-250 m3/s. Then the whole beat is fishable. If it is less than 40 m3/s the river is flowing slowly throughout most of the beat. And is it more than 250 m3/s it seems that the salmon choose to swim on the other side of the river, and that means less pressure on the salmon already holding on the beat.
