Jan Erik.

Flyfishing in Summer on Gaula setup
Hi there Jan Erik,
I have just finished watching you DVD summer in Gaula for the 9th time, what a great journey through the season you provided. My question is regarding "what appears to be" the ultimate shooting heads setup. Can you tell me which double handed rods your were using and yuor favourite, which shooting heads, and the polyleaders and lenghts, also your tippet type and lengths.
Regards and thanks,
Darren Topp Aberdeenshire. Scotland.
Hi there. Thanks for your great feedback on my latest DVD. I moustly use Guide Line rods; the absolut favourite rod is from Le Cie range. this rod is called Le Cie 14,8 feet for line weights 10-11 with fast action. For this rod I use the Guide Line shooting heads, called Power Taper, and which of these I use is deteremined by the water level in the river. However, all the shooting heads I use for this rod are in class 10-11 and they weight 44 grams. My favourite shooting head for general fishing is the float/synk 1 shooting head. I do not use polyleaders for my fishing, and I make my own leaders, tapering them using either normal nylon or fluorcarbon materials. Have a look at my artickle on leaders on my website, there you will see how I create my tippets/leaders.
Regards. Jan Erik.

Fly tying
Hi I have tied some of the flies described on your web page. Just wondering: do you use lots of hair? It looks that way. I use fox hair for the under-wing in order to support the whole wing, and only temple dog for the middle and over-wing. I fished the River Orkla at Vormstad camping for the first this summer, and caught a 6,5 kilo salmon on a db 12 shrimp fly. I know you have been fishing with a G. Loomis GLX 15 feet rod, I have the same rod myself. What length shooting head would you use with this rod? I use one of 12,2 meters.
Best regards Sveinung Rødseth Myre in Vesterålen
Hi. I use various amounts of hair for my flies, for the flies used throughout the season the amount of hair actually changes quite substantially. There should be quite a difference between a Green Highlander used for spring flood fishing versus a Green Highlander used for fishing a low river with spooky fish. It is important to change the amount of hair used, but also the colour impact of the flies, for spring flood fishing I use thick wings with lots of flash. Later in the season I barely use any flash at all. I use a shooting head of 44 grams for my 15 feet GLX, the length can vary between 12,5 – 13 meters depending on what type of shooting head I use.
Congratulations on catching your first Orkla salmon! Regards, Jan Erik.

Spey casting practice
Hi there!
First of all I would like to say that you’re doing a great job with your web page! It rules!! I have been extremely inspired by your DVD and your web page. I have now purchased a G. Loomis Native Run GLX 10’ #8. I will practice a lot this winter and thus I wonder which fly line is well suited for this purpose? Shooting head or WF line? And which line class? Look forward to your reply. Looking forward to the new DVD and the Haltdalen trip in August!
Regards, GLX
